Practice TEF listening and speaking under exam conditions

Exam Français is an Android app for the listening and speaking parts of TEF Canada and TEFAQ. The mock tests run the same way as the real one: 40 questions in about 40 minutes, each recording plays once, and you can't go back to an earlier question.

Try a question

This is an A1 conversation from our practice bank. On the exam, questions 1 to 4 work like this: you hear a short dialogue and pick the picture that goes with it.

Read the question and the options first, then start the recording. You can only play it once, as in the exam. After you answer, you'll see the transcript and can listen again.

The recording and the question are in French, as in the exam.

— Bonjour, un aller simple pour Québec, s’il vous plaît. L’autobus, c’est trop long.
— Le train de quatorze heures dix est complet. Il reste des places dans celui de quinze heures trente, quai trois.
— D’accord, je prends celui-là. Je paie par carte.

How the listening test works

There are four parts, always in the same order. Before each recording you get a few seconds to read the question, and after it a fixed amount of time to answer. Our mock tests use the same timings as the exam.

Questions Part What you hear Total
Q 01–04DialoguesFour short conversations between two people. For each one, you pick the matching picture.4
Q 05–20Short messagesPublic announcements, voicemail messages and street interviews (micro-trottoir), where three people answer the same question.16
Q 21–30RadioTwo radio columns, three interviews and one report. The interviews are played twice. Each interview and the report come with two questions.10
Q 31–40MiscellaneousTen unrelated recordings: news briefs, opinion pieces, film and book reviews. This is usually the hardest part; in our bank these recordings range from B2 to C2.10

40 questions in about 40 minutesEvery question is multiple choice.

Each recording plays onceThe only exception is the interviews in the radio part, which you hear twice.

You can't go backWhen the answer time runs out, the test moves on to the next question by itself.

Wrong answers cost nothing extraA wrong answer scores the same as a blank one, which is zero, so it's always worth picking something.

What's in the app

Mock tests
Full 40-question tests in the same order and with the same timings as the exam. At the end, the app estimates your score out of 699 and the matching NCLC level (NCLC 7, for example, starts at 434). It's an estimate; only the TEF itself gives an official result.
Listening bank
152 recordings sorted by task type and by level, from A1 to C2, so you can work on one part of the exam at a time. The voices come from Québec, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Africa.
Review
Questions you get wrong are kept in a separate list. You can replay them as often as you like, with the transcript in front of you.
Speaking
60 topics for both parts of the speaking test. In section A (5 min) you call about an ad and ask around ten questions. In section B (10 min) you tell a friend about an ad and answer their objections. There's a timer, voice recording, useful phrases and a checklist to assess yourself.
Guides
How the exam runs, how to listen to each type of recording, common mistakes and a day-by-day practice plan.
Language
The interface is available in French, English, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian. Recordings and questions are always in French.

Common questions

Which exams does it prepare me for?

The listening and speaking parts of TEF Canada and TEFAQ. We'll add TCF Canada prep later.

How close are the mock tests to the real exam?

They follow the official format: 40 questions in about 40 minutes, in four parts. Recordings play once (interviews twice), and the test moves on by itself without letting you go back.

How does the app estimate my score?

From your mock test results, the app estimates your score on the TEF scale from 0 to 699 and shows the matching NCLC level. Use it to track your progress; only the exam gives an official result.

Do I need an account?

No. Install the app and start right away.

What can I do for free?

Take one full mock test a day, listen to 42 recordings, practice with 20 speaking topics and read all the guides. Full access costs US$19.99, paid once, and unlocks the rest.

When is it coming out, and will there be an iPhone version?

The Android version is coming to Google Play soon. An iOS version will follow later.
